Zune HD AV Dock - Cool Details

Here are some cool details about the Zune AV Dock for the Zune HD that make this product very cool … (at least to us).

OLD ZUNES WILL WORK IN THE NEW DOCK: Obviously they won't make your Zunes magically output to HD - but if you've got another Zune in your inventory, you'll be able to use it on the new device.

ZUNE HDs WILL WORK IN THE OLD DOCKS: You won't get HD output but, still very cool

HD RADIO FROM ZUNE HD IN THE NEW ZUNE DOCK: You can have HD radio in your home stereo system now (with the Zune HD hooked up of course).

COMPOSITE AND HDMI CHORDS INCLUDED: Nice, eh?

Watcha think?  Gonna buy one?

I'm using my old AV Dock that I purchased for my Zune 80 with my Zune HD. Even though the output from this older AV dock is RCA Composite cables, the picture quality (from video Podcasts) is WAY better on my HD TV than it ever was out of my Zune 80. The remote control meant for the Zune 80/120, controls the Zune HD too. For the question about playing the FM Radio through the Dock; On my old Dock at least, the remote control changes the stations, but the reception is weaker than if you are holding the Zune in the same location but in your hand. I don't know why that would be, but that's my experience with it.

I plan to get the proper Zune Sync Dock when I have a little more cash. The AV/Power Pac cables are everything that the AV Dock package contains EXCEPT the Dock & Remote. What they should be selling is the Dock ONLY without the remote control. That way those of us that have the old AV Dock could use the cables we already have plus a generic HDMI to output the 720p.

The Zune HD itself is GREAT!

The AV dock is $90 while the sync dock is $50. The docks are the same and both include the remote and ac adapter. The AV dock just adds the HDMI and composite cables. You likely have a composite cable hanging around (you can use any old one, just have to swap some of the colors around) and an HDMI cable can be had for much less than $40.

The old Zunes couldn't play the radio when they were docked since the headphone jack is blocked by the dock and the headphones are the antenna. Is the HD any different; in other words, do we know we can play the radio (and HD radio) when it is docked?
  • We've been told the old docks will work - just won't do the Zune HD stuff without a Zune HD dock.

Absolutely getting one. I was going to for new my Zune HD anyway, but now knowing the old Zune's will work in the dock? Knowing the new Zune will work in my old doc until Christmas when I can afford the new dock? HDMI cables included? All very very good news. Now I'm not just anticipating, I'm actually excited.
