Forget the Zune Marketplace? DRM Free Tunes From Universal?

The NYT is reporting that Universal Music is going to start selling music without any DRM at all. And, according to them, iTunes ain't gonna get a piece of this action.

DRM free not only means that you can play on your Zune, but it means that whatever comes next, or whatever else you might have (a cell phone, a flash player for jogging, etc.) … will play those tunes as well.

Friends, buy the music that makes sense to your implementation.

DRM on purchased content is quickly dieing - you just can't deny that. DRM as a management tool for rental services (such as the Zune all-you-can-eat plans) still makes a lot of sense. Unless Apple quickly enters into this game, you're going to see Zune as the one provider of something you can't get anywhere else.

It gets more interesting every day …
