Zune 2.0 - Why The Rumors Make No Sense

ZuneScene.com is getting a lot of press for their story on "leaked" Zune 2.0 details. You can catch the commentary at Techememe.

Now, I stood in line at the Zune Party at CES and know some of the Zune employees to be a bit loose-lipped - so that isn't the problem I have with these rumors.

The first problem is this one - Zune 2.0. Microsoft has said all along that they intend on doing a lot to upgrade what they currently have. They built the product this way on purpose. 2.0 is much farther away than the Flash Zune and the probably eventual Zune Phone. New versions of the Zune are coming - 2.0 not so much. These two elements don't belong in the same conversation.

And, let's be honest, Microsoft is really into this multiple color thing and will be riding it for a long time. We know that. If they dared make the red one Podcasting enabled or something like that … nope, not gonna happen.

Second problem is this … 2.4 million manufactured 2007 - 2/3 of them Flash. Everyone laughed at the goal of 1 million first year. 2.4 million means three times the production? Seems like a bit of a stretch.

Finally the comment on the "have to beat the competition" part. That ain't their focus. Whether or not it should be, that ain't their focus.

1. If the larger LCD screen picture is wrong, than the 2.0 is not much more than a Zune 1.0 with more storage.

2. Flash Zunes will sell faster due to lower price. Plus maybe an international launch will occur rather than US only.

3. This guy was NOT from marketing. He doesn't know (or care) about the marketing plan.
