DRM Ain't (Entirely) All Evil
In response to the dialogue about DRM in the "sphere" today, we have an interesting quote from Zune Insider.
DRM has enabled a few interesting scenarios, like the Zune Pass subscription service
As I type this, I have Down from the Mountain playing on my Zune. It's an album I've been interested in - but I was pretty sure I only needed to hear it once and didn't mind paying accordingly. My monthly Zune Pass subscription is about right.
In addition to that, in another room, my kids are watching Pooh's Heffalump Movie on the Xbox 360 thanks to the recent Vongo announcement. No, we didn't buy the movie either, we got it as part of the monthly Vongo service.
So, DRM lets me do some very cool things - but DRM also gets in the way of me just trying to listen to my music.
So what do we do about DRM?
It's part of the game (and I don't think it is going away) … so let's play the game. The more we tell the story of DRM done right (and I'm using it twice tonight), the more attention and focus this DRM might get.
