Zune Hack #1 - Zune As A Portable Wifi Sharing Hard Drive

Updated: Other Zune Hacks Here.

Ah, the sweet hacks. I love an age that brings 3rd party fixes to problems with first party devices.

In short, a few simple tweaks and, bam, you can use your Zune as an external hard drive and, for bonus, share files via Wifi.

Very misleading. The "Share files via wi-fi" is an annoying process that requires you to do the HD hack, rename your files, send them, along with a real picture to the other device, then use the other device to rename the files back to their original. And doesnt enable anything close to pc-zune wifi

Okay, this is not a new subject but for some it is. First of all, WiFi can and will stream just about anything and yes you can run it on the fly, you do not need to reload it to anything ( another drive) else to see / hear it…. so why end up with copies of the same stuff (files) on every machine around the house (network)? Provided your player (s) (PSP, TV, Handheld device) must be able to read the format (files) you'll be able to run them real-time anytime! I use both external hard drives and location free routers / servers and WiFi externals, to send and receive files (movies, photos, music, audio, data and games) to a variety of devices through out my home (network).

Example, download a movie online to my external drive from my laptop (XP / Vista) file completes, turn on my PSP, TV and or PS3 and watch the movie. The only single "existing" drawback is you (I) can only view the file (movie/music) on one machine (system) at a time, no multi feeds "YET! But I feel this is also achievable with a little thought and tweaking! Remember the most and only real important issue to be concerned with is the original format is compatible with your device… But if needed you can do a conversion to another format to meet the needs of the device you are using at any given time. Last but not least, I live in the country with little chance of anyone making any attempts to enter my network…(home network) if you live in an apartment or subv… you may want to use a closed network only (encrypt)… otherwise what you have they have too! Make it easy name your devices and use the same name just number them ( laptop1, 2 and so on). be sure your network has a different name and it is only used to go outside of the network (home) otherwise you are also open to anyone on the net. I hope this helps, it seems a bit difficult at first but soon it sinks in and everything makes complete sense. Oh almost forgot, you may need to set ports accordingly, so the communications are open to other devices. Setting your ports and enabling your devices is easy, just open the folder (s) click share and you're ready to rock! share to your network will work fine, no special settings is needed in either XP or vista, although I have found Vista to work better and have less a chance of run problems (er-messages). Also read before you click, it may save you hours if not days of trying fix something you didn't mean to change….Good luck! WiFi is the only way to Fly!
