5 Things Zune Can Do To Dominate the Space
O.k., I've been complaining a bit. Let's get down to business here.
Microsoft, this one is free.
5 Things Microsoft Can Do To Dominate the Space:
- Release the Firmware Podcatcher ASAP. You know it is there. I know it is there. We all know it is there. Even your evangelists are pushing that the Zune will "play" Podcasts. Every single PME on the planet will "play" Podcasts. Zune has the power to catch them withtout hooking up to a computer. How cool is that? Open 'er up!
- Add a Podcast Directory to the Zune Marketplace. We know that the Marketplace will be a sales center for all kinds of user generated content. Wet our appetites without spending a dime.
- Trust the User. Kill the we don't trust you so we DRM everything schtick. 'Specially when your own VP says things like "Lots of DVD ripping software out there … we'll support those.." Support us, not the record industry.
- Let Us Pop Out The Battery. Wifi is gonna drain those bad boys. Let us (especially us revision 1 types) have a spare battery for the road. Let us at least buy one. That would drive Steve crazy.
- Leverage the Wifi Past Sharing. Yes, social media and social network and all that stuff is very cool. Even cooler, letting me buy (or grab) stuff right from my Zune. You keep telling us that this is the product for a post-pc world. Prove it.
But then again, what do I know ;-)?

[...] See, the story here ain't about new iPods with bigger screens or Zunes that are hoping to gain market share. The story is about me being able to get my media on my terms. [...]
[...] For the first post of the year, I'll return to my inane gadget musing of the past. Now I don't own a Zune. In fact, I've never touched one. But I can tell I don't want one … yet. If they ever get Linux on it, then the chances are it'd be awesome. If the wifi was actually wifi (as in, check your email and surf the web) and the "squirting" was just straight file sharing, it'd be cooler than an iPod: the screens bigger and the battery lasts longer. As it stands, every body thinks it sucks, from GeekBrief to Leo Laporte to CNN. I would never get one now because it doesn't work on Mac. Even the Zune-a-philes have lists of needed improvements, like Zune Luv. To boot, Microsuck has made some freaky ads.
