Zune's Impact Can't Not Be Felt
In short, Apple, finally has a real competitor. What happens when you have a real competitor? You kick things up a notch or two, or three, or four.
Until now, simply, Apple had nobody else that even came close. They owned 80+% since day one and looked at the "others" the same way I'm looking at the fly that buzzes around the room as I write this piece. When nobody else matters, you can get lazy.
Now, I would never accuse Apple of being lazy, but I can accuse them of acting like they're number 1 with a bullet.
Microsoft is the only company that really can change that.
Apple will have to respond accordingly.
Apple hasn't touched certain areas yet. You can't rent a movie from Apple (you can on Microsoft technology). There is no iPim, but Microsoft has Pims that play MP3 files.
Now, iPods work great with Windows.
Could Zune work great with Apple? Linux? How cool would that be.
The game, at the very least, will get more interesting.

Are you a moron?
Microsoft won't make the Zune ever work with linux, not by design, anyway. If they wanted that they would have just programmed it with the option to be a UMS.
Why don't you stop acting like Zune is an IPOD killer and start doing some real research. The Zune is a crippled player that might sell some but unless Microsoft actually decides to make it work with other OS's, it's not going to go anywhere. All in all, who cares in the mp3 player market? They all do the same thing - play music. It's this kind of article that makes Apple and Zune both grin at the market they have made, each one helping the other out.
Do you ever wonder WHY they don't just make the greatest player? Why, it's so they can just screw us over for years while we're waiting for that "perfect player". Leave out something this year so we can buy one while we're wating and then save up and get the next one.
I say, who cares anymore.
